A space to pause, connect and be.The Pebble is a beautiful, immersive space for rest, connection and quiet within busy public places and festivals.
Made from natural willow and woven with ribbons, fabrics and found materials, The Pebble creates a gentle sense of enclosure without shutting the outside world away. From within its circular form, you can still see and hear what is happening around you, while feeling held within a smaller, calmer space.
The Pebble began with a simple idea: what if, within the energy and excitement of a festival, there was somewhere you could simply stop?
Somewhere to sit with your children.
Somewhere to breathe.
Somewhere to listen.
Somewhere to gather yourself.
At its first outing at We Out Here Festival, The Pebble became just that. Families used it as a place to pause and regroup, with parents telling us how relieved they were to find somewhere calm within the busy festival environment. One visitor described it as “a daytime campfire” — a place to gather together, without needing to do anything.
The space can also become a place for gentle creative and sensory experiences. Sound can be woven into The Pebble through singing bowls, music, voice and other forms of listening. At We Out Here, the vibrations of singing bowls resonated into the ground beneath us, creating a deeply immersive experience even amidst the sounds of the festival.
Visitors can also contribute to the space. At We Out Here, people were invited to write messages to loved ones or wishes for the world onto pieces of fabric, which were then woven into The Pebble. These small acts of sharing became part of the structure itself — a collective gathering of words, hopes and connections.
The Pebble is rooted in the belief that creative spaces can hold us.
They can offer moments of calm, connection and reflection without requiring anything from us. They can give children somewhere to retreat and adults somewhere to pause. They can bring people together in a circle and create opportunities for shared experience, conversation and quiet.
The Pebble is an evolving project. Each version can respond to its setting and the people who inhabit it, incorporating different materials, colours, sounds, words and creative contributions.
Future iterations might become larger and more immersive, incorporating coloured translucent materials, drawings, fragments of songs and words created by young people. There is also potential to create smaller spaces within The Pebble, offering children their own intimate places to explore, retreat and play.
At its heart, though, The Pebble remains simple:
